Abdullah Ibn Abbas (RA)
shares an authentic account recorded by 'at-Tabarani' about the Prophet (Pbuh)
visiting an unknown sick man from the Ansar community. This man is simply
referred to as "Rajulan min al-Ansar" meaning a man from the Ansar,
with no mention of his name. As the Prophet (Pbuh) approached the man's home,
he overheard the man speaking to someone inside, after which he knocked on the
door and asked for permission to enter. However, upon entering, the Prophet
(Pbuh) found no one with the sick man. The man then explained to the Prophet (Pbuh)
that he had briefly stepped out because he was upset about how people were
treating him due to his illness, which is described in the narration as a
"hum-ma," meaning fever, but it is possible that it had caused some
visible appearance or behavior that led to negative treatment. The illness had
made the Ansari man unappealing to others.
The sick man went on to tell the Prophet
that someone had visited him in his absence, and he had never met a more
honorable and eloquent person, except for the Prophet himself. The Prophet then
informed the man that the visitor was none other than Jibreel (AS) and further
emphasized that there are people among them whose oaths Allah would honor. This
narration is linked to the idea that a sick believer is always surrounded by
angels, as angels visit and receives visitors, and the sick person is
continually expiating their sins.
It is a well-known fact that even a minor
illness can attract the company of angels, as the Prophet (Pbuh) taught that
70,000 angels accompany those who visit the sick. On the Day of Judgment, those
who neglected to do good deeds will be reminded of their missed opportunities
by Allah Himself, who will say, "I was sick and you did not visit
me." Allah will inform them that if they had visited a sick person, they
would have found Him with them. In one narration, an Ansari man, who was
suffering from an illness that caused people to treat him unkindly, received a
visit from Jibreel (AS) in human form. This event left the Prophet (Pbuh) in
awe and made him realize that there are people amongst us who are unknown yet
hold a high position with Allah. This is reinforced by other narrations that
describe the people of Jannah as being weak and humble, with praiseworthy
characteristics brought out of them due to their experiences of poverty and
hardship.
According to the teachings of the Prophet
(Pbuh), there are individuals who may not hold much weight in society, yet are
held in high regard by Allah due to their humility. These individuals are so
highly esteemed that if they were to take an oath upon Allah, Allah would honor
it, which is a greater honor than having one's supplications answered. As a
result, we should never turn away from anyone, particularly those who are sick
or lack social prominence. The Prophet (Pbuh) cautions us that there may be
people among us who are deserving of a visit from Jibreel (AS), yet we may not
welcome them into our homes. Therefore, it is essential to remember not to
disregard someone simply because they are not socially prominent.
